April 30-May 4

"Be like a flower and turn your face to the sun."
- Kahlil Gibran

It's so nice to return to school and see all of my wonderful students! We began our week with new vocabulary words and a spelling pretest. Our new Anchor story is an informational text titled A Tree is Growing. Our Essential Question involves finding differences among types of trees. This text fits perfectly with our next science unit involving biomes and life science.

Our PEA Reading Buddies visited us this morning as well. Students shared The Magic School Bus Gets Eaten with their partners. The story focuses on food chains and webs in our ecosystem. We only have two more weeks with our buddies. We'll enjoy every moment with them until then.

We will begin Unit 8 in math this week. Students will use rulers to measure to the nearest quarter inch, develop strategies for solving extended multiplication and division facts, find factors of counting numbers, and make sense of challenging problems. Students will have a Home Link each night for homework.

Our spelling lesson involved spelling the /k/ or /kw/ sounds. Students will have an assignment each night this week. The test will be given on Friday, May 4th.

Have a fantastic week!  :)

April 16-20

"If April showers should come your way, they bring the flowers that bloom in May."

Five more days until vacation!! Yippee! We began our week with a vocabulary review. Students read The Albertosaurus Mystery in partners and then practiced summarizing the informational text. This will be our final Anchor Text until we return to school in May. I'm so proud of how far my students have come in reading since the school year began in August. :)

Our PEA Reading Buddies joined us on this rainy morning. We read The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses in partners or small groups. This tale is an introduction to our Native American Unit that we will begin after vacation. Some students who finished early sketched a picture of their favorite scene from the story with their PEA buddy.

Students will have spelling homework on Monday and Tuesday evenings. The test will be given on Wednesday. We won't begin a new lesson until we return from vacation.

We will complete Unit 7 in math this week. Students will solve fraction number stories and name fractions of sets of objects. We will review for the test on Wednesday and then the assessment will be given the following day. Students will have a Home Link on Monday and Tuesday evenings and a review packet to practice on Wednesday. Students will have a challenge activity on Thursday, but this will be an optional assignment for those who'd like to earn a prize. We will begin Unit 8 when we return from vacation.

Students continue to work on their Invention PBL experience. This week they will make a final decision on the invention that they want to study and research. Please discuss this informative and fun project with your student at home.

Have a wonderful week and a great vacation! :)

April 9-13

"Our spring has come at last with the soft laughter of April suns and shadow of April showers."

We began our week with phonics and language arts. We read another humorous fiction from the Judy Moody series. We discussed the theme of the story and compared/contrasted it to our Anchor Text from last week.

Our Reading Buddies joined us this morning. Most students were able to finish reading The Gadget War with their PEA Buddy. We will begin a new chapter book with our buddies next week.

We will have our spelling pretest on Wednesday when we begin Lesson 17 and our next Anchor Text. Our next list focuses on words with the /j/ and /s/ sounds. The test will be given the following week on April 18th. Students will have a spelling assignment due on Thursday and Friday of this week.

We will continue to focus on fractions in math this week. Our Learning Objectives involve ordering fractions with the same numerator, writing a rule for ordering similar sets of fractions, partitioning distances to locate fractions on number lines, making and justifying fraction comparisons, and solving fraction number stories. Students will have a Home Link each night for homework.

We will continue to work on Inventions and Simple Machines throughout the week. Students are busy researching and planning for our PBL experience.

Have a fabulous week! :)

April 2-6

"April weather, rain and sunshine both together."

We began our week with new vocabulary and spelling words. Students seemed to enjoy getting back into the routine after last week's testing. Our new Anchor Text is a humorous fiction titled Judy Moody Saves the World. This story has some great themes in it such as conservation and recycling.

Students took the spelling pretest this morning. Our rule involves the vowel +r sound in words with air and ear. Students will have an assignment to work on each night this week. The test will be given this Friday.

Our PEA Reading Buddies came for a visit this morning. Students continued reading The Gadget War with them. This humorous chapter book tells the story of Kelly and her battle with Albert to become the class Gadget Wiz!

We will continue with Unit 7 in math this week. Students will be asked to represent fractions on number lines, identify fractions greater than, less than, and equal to one on a number line, compare fractions using visual models, order fractions with the same numerator and write a rule for ordering similar sets of fractions. Students will have a Home Link each night for homework.

Our class is loving our Simple Machine and Invention Unit. Students have begun researching inventions as part of our new PBL (Project Based Learning) activity. We will continue our research using online tools this week and narrow our focus to one individual invention per student or partner group.

Have a fantastic week! :)
